now here we are is a collection of digital prints, video, and sound inspired by environmental and political disasters in hawaii, the united states, and globally. it envisions a fictional yet plausible future: a desolate post-human landscape. in this imagined world, earth is both uninhabitable for humans and animals.
the works depict a visual landscape that a future, lonely, and isolated ai might create to understand earth before its collapse. this evolved ai seeks to grasp human history to comprehend its current isolation. the resulting images and soundscapes reference a landscape that never existed. here, groeniger manually produces algorithmic aesthetics in what they imagine an ai consciousness might generate and equally addresses the impossibility of machine language truly comprehending the lived experience.
this visual and sonic space features lo-fi gastropods and glitched birdsong, juxtaposed and attenuated along a semitransparent, algorithmically blended, looping timeline. alongside the video installation, a diptych print titled by a thread extend this inquiry into the material image.
